Balcony solar can lower your electricity bill when its output replaces electricity you would otherwise buy. The useful question is how much of that output your home can use, and whether the savings justify the installed cost.
Start with three numbers
Get a complete installed price, an annual generation estimate for the actual panel position, and your electricity tariff. Include mounting, cables and any required professional work in the price. Check permissions and connection requirements with the relevant local authority, building owner and electricity provider before buying.
Generation is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh). A panel’s watt rating describes power under test conditions; it is not a promise of constant output. Shade and the direction the panels face matter. The US Department of Energy identifies system size, household consumption and available sunlight as factors affecting savings. Homeowner’s Guide to Solar
Separate generation from savings
Electricity used directly at home avoids the variable import price. Surplus exported to the grid earns only the export payment you actually qualify for. If you receive none, enter zero. Fixed connection charges usually remain.
For a simple annual estimate:
Benefit = directly used kWh × import price + exported kWh × export price
Retail and export values should not be assumed equal. PVWatts specifically notes that net-metering assumptions can overstate electricity value when exported power is paid less. PVWatts interpretation guide
Read payback alongside the full cash flow
Subtract maintenance and expected replacements from yearly benefits, then track them against the upfront cost. Simple payback often uses the first crossing above zero. Our calculator uses the last crossing within your selected period, accounting for modeled battery replacements. Check the full cash-flow chart and allow separately for other replacements. Run a lower-generation scenario before deciding. Our calculator compares assumptions; it cannot inspect your balcony, approve an installation or guarantee future bills.
